Cathedral Music

Choir
The Cathedral Choir sings at most Sunday services September through May. Practices are Wednesday evenings from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM in the Cathedral. The Choir is noted for the breadth of its repertoire, from classical to 19th-century Americana (particularly appropriate and effective in the space) to light contemporary.

Capella
This unique instrumental ensemble performs at one Sunday service each month from September through May. They provide a lighter but sophisticated repertoire, with influences ranging from Celtic, Hispanic and African traditions to Duke Ellington.

Handbell Choir
The Cathedral’s Handbell Choir consists of volunteers of varying ages, and provides music on special occasions throughout the academic year (typically Christ the King, Christmas, first Sunday of Lent, Easter, and Pentecost). The ensemble rehearses most weeks, following the Sunday morning service.

If you wish to participate in any of these ensembles, or would simply like more information, please contact Stephen May, Cathedral Organist & Choirmaster, at 507-334-7732.

The Bell Tower
The Cathedral’s bell tower has a chime stand of 10 bells, plus a tolling bell, all installed in 1902. The bells can be played either manually or through a programmable MIDI controller. The tower bells provide daily concerts of single selections at 9AM and 6PM, and a six-song program at noon. The selections represent not only a wide range of hymnal traditions (Episcopal, Lutheran, Roman Catholic, Hispanic, Baptist, etc.), but also surprising entries from classical music as well as popular and patriotic songs. Stop by during the summer and you might hear “Take me out to the ballgame,” or drop in on Halloween for the Funeral March from Chopin’s second piano sonata (in its entirety).

Merner Concert Series 2013-2014

The Cathedral also presents the Merner Concert Series, made possible by funds from the estate of Dr. Thomas and Elizabeth Merner. The concerts are often benefits for the Community Cathedral Café, with free-will offerings accepted. All concerts are held in the Cathedral.

Upcoming events include a free recital on June 20th by Cathedral Organist Dr. Stephen May as part of Faribault's Heritage Days celebration. The concert is at 7:00 PM, and features a selection of unusual hymn tune settings, and Boellmann's Gothic Suite. Refreshments will follow.
